How to Build a Home First Aid Kit

What a genuinely useful first aid kit needs — whether you buy one ready-made or build your own.

The essentials

• Wound care: adhesive bandages in several sizes, sterile gauze pads, adhesive tape, antiseptic liquid or wipes.
• Tools: scissors, tweezers (for splinters/stings), a digital thermometer, disposable gloves.
• Medication basics: paracetamol for pain/fever, an antihistamine for allergic reactions, oral rehydration salts (ORS), and any prescribed emergency medication (like an inhaler or EpiPen) for household members who need one.
• For burns and sprains: a burn gel or dressing, an instant cold pack, and a crepe/elastic bandage.

Ready-made kit vs. building your own

A ready-made kit is a fast, sensible starting point — but check what's actually inside before buying, since quality and completeness vary a lot. Many people supplement a base kit with a few extras (like ORS packets or a stronger antiseptic) suited to their own household, especially if there are young children, elderly members, or someone with a known allergy.

Where to keep it

Somewhere accessible but away from direct sunlight and humidity (bathroom cabinets can degrade contents faster than a bedroom shelf). Check expiry dates every 6 months and restock anything used.
