Emergency

Symptoms

Sudden difficulty breathing, unable to speak or cough, clutching the throat, bluish lips.

Cause

An object (often food) blocking the airway.

Prevention

Cut food into small pieces, chew thoroughly, supervise young children while eating, avoid small objects within reach of infants.

Treatment

Back blows and abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver) for a conscious adult/child; CPR if the person becomes unconscious.
